Such a great time of year when everything turns green and the snow finally melts. We’ve had a lot of rain this year so it’s been hard to get out and work. But we continue to prune, feed and mow getting ready for our blueberry season.

I was pretty aggressive with the pruning this year. We inherited some very old bushes and it has taken time to eliminate all the old canes to make room for new growth. Since I’m still pretty new at this, I’m never really sure if I’m removing the right branch or if I’m doing too much. I actually love the look of an old blueberry bush, tall and full at the top. But if the bush too overgrown, it won’t produce fruit, so eliminating the older canes is necessary.

Farming is an act of faith. So many factors play into the end result. You do what you think is best but ultimately you don’t know the outcome until harvest.

We have been lucky with our farm and are happy with the results. We look forward to seeing those of you who have been here in the past and meeting new friends this year during U-Pick.
